The Apostle Paul
Romans 8:31BSB·traditional attribution

What then shall we say in response to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?

William Burkitt Anglican

God has been and will be on His people's side, especially in affliction and difficulty. Those whom God is for need not fear how many or how mighty their enemies are. God approves, owns, assists, and helps them; He will succeed and bless and crown them. How dangerous to be against those whom God is for!

When adversity surrounds us, we judge God's love by present sorrows and lose heart; but Paul calls us to look deeper. God's favor, consecrated in Christ, is the brazen wall that shields us from all dangers, not that nothing opposes us, but that His paternal love secures our victory over every enemy.

What conclusion follows from all that has been proved? If God is our friend, having adopted us and granted us His Spirit for our salvation, then who can injure or destroy us? Sinners may oppose us and so may our great enemy, but their power to destroy is gone; God is mightier than all our foes.
