Evening comes when the sun sets, the time fixed for paying labourers their wages. This evening may signify the end of the Jewish age and calling of the Gentiles, or the close of the Gospel when all God's elect are gathered in. The Lord of the vineyard is God the Father; His steward, Christ the Mediator, who holds all grace and eternal life to distribute to His people.
