Luke
Luke 19:24KJV·traditional attribution

And he said unto them that stood by, Take from him the pound, and give it to him that hath ten pounds.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

His friends were entirely mistaken about what kingdom He would set up. They thought their Master would march into Jerusalem with temporal power and pomp, seize the throne straightaway, and reign like any earthly king. But He must go to heaven first, to the right hand of the Father, before His kingdom appears. Even good men muddle the nature of Christ's reign.

John Gill Reformed Baptist

And they said unto him,.... The bystanders; Lord, he hath ten pounds; which they say either through envy, at his superior gifts, and usefulness; for it is generally the lot of the most eminent and useful servants of Christ to be envied by others; or in surprise, as wondering at the conduct of Christ in giving more to such, who had so much already.
