Joshua
Joshua 4:14KJV·traditional attribution

On that day the LORD magnified Joshua in the sight of all Israel; and they feared him, as they feared Moses, all the days of his life.

John Calvin Reformed

God did not perform this miracle chiefly to exalt Joshua, but the people needed a firmly established head, and so the Lord marked him with sacred insignia to make him venerable and prevent contempt. We learn that God commends to us those through whose hands He displays His excellent working, and requires our due honor and reverence.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Joshua kept every detail of what Moses had taught him close at hand, and when the moment came to lead God's people, he neither added to his orders nor forgot them. We must do the same: hold fast the good instructions given us, ready to pull them out when we need them most.

Commenting on Joshua 4:10-19

John Gill Reformed Baptist

The Lord made Joshua great and honorable in Israel's sight by doing what he foretold: dividing Jordan's waters and drying the riverbed so they crossed on dry land. They feared and revered him all his days, yielding him obedience as they had Moses.
