Joshua
Joshua 23:7KJV·traditional attribution

That ye come not among these nations, these that remain among you; neither make mention of the name of their gods, nor cause to swear by them, neither serve them, nor bow yourselves unto them:

John Calvin Reformed

Joshua warns them plainly: intimate fellowship with these nations will draw them into idolatry. They are surrounded by Satan's snares and their appetite for false worship is headlong. Any naming, swearing, serving, or bowing to idols, even the smallest particle, robs God of His honor. They must cleave to Him alone, bound to Him entirely.

AI summary

John Gill Reformed Baptist

No free commerce or alliance with them, no attending their feasts. Never mention their gods except with contempt, call them dunghill gods as Scripture does. Do not swear by them, cause others to swear by them, or perform any religious service toward them whatsoever. Give them no adoration, external or internal.

AI summary

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Reformed

God pledges what He has already given as proof of what remains to be fulfilled. But His promise depends entirely on their keeping themselves clear of the Canaanites and their idolatry. Steadfast adherence to God's law will bring brilliant victories; any other path breaks the condition.
