Ezekiel
Ezekiel 32:23KJV·traditional attribution

Whose graves are set in the sides of the pit, and her company is round about her grave: all of them slain, fallen by the sword, which caused terror in the land of the living.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Egypt's funeral is appointed: she must go down to the pit with all the other proud kingdoms that came before her. No nation, however fair or flourishing, escapes this common grave. She drinks the same bloody cup as the rest, and all her multitude falls by the sword. Let her have an honorable burial, but do not mistake it for exemption from judgment.

The graves lie arranged in the pit's depths, the king of Assyria encircled by his commanders and soldiers, all slain by the sword. These men who once terrorized every neighboring kingdom, extorting submission through threat of destruction, now lie powerless in death and can disturb no one.

Eastern tombs were rock chambers with bodies laid in niches carved at the sides. The irony cuts deep: those who spread terror while alive have become a terrible sight to behold in the nether world, a spectacle of God's judgment.
