Daniel
Daniel 2:48KJV·traditional attribution

Then the king made Daniel a great man, and gave him many great gifts, and made him ruler over the whole province of Babylon, and chief of the governors over all the wise men of Babylon.

John Calvin Reformed

Nebuchadnezzar honored God's servant rightly in giving him office and gifts, just as Joseph took the government of Egypt; there is no shame in it. But Daniel could not have been corrupted by these honors, for he had already despised the king's own food rather than defile himself, and bore his exile with patience. He received them so he might relieve his oppressed people.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Nebuchadnezzar saw divinity in Daniel after this revelation and fell to worship him, commanding oblation and incense. God magnified His own word so powerfully that a proud king forgot Daniel was a man and forgot he himself was king. Though such worship cannot be justified, Daniel likely refused these honors, as Peter and John refused the like.

Commenting on Daniel 2:46-49

John Gill Reformed Baptist

Daniel was great in spiritual things before, now made great in worldly things by God's providence; those who honor God He will honor. The gifts were many and rich, which Daniel accepted not for himself alone but to do good to his poor Jewish brethren in captivity. This office gave him opportunity to inculcate true knowledge and correct what was impious among the wise men.
