The Apostle Peter
1 Peter 1:14KJV·traditional attribution

As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance:

John Calvin Reformed

Adoption is gratuitous, but obedience marks children from strangers. We cannot wear God's image while we retain the image of Adam, the old man with his lusts must be destroyed. Unbelief is the fountain of all evils, and ignorance means wandering blind without the true light.

AI summary

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Gird up the loins of your mind as a traveller girds his garments for the road. You have a race to run and warfare to accomplish; disengage from all that hinders, restrain extravagance, and go resolutely in obedience. Hope fully, for grace comes to you in the revelation of Christ.

Commenting on 1 Peter 1:13-23

John Gill Reformed Baptist

You are children of obedience and must imitate your Father in holiness. Do not be fashioned to the lusts you served in unregenerate darkness, they are foolish, hurtful, deceitful, and war against the soul. The time past suffices for having walked in them.
