David
Psalm 60:11ESV·superscription

Oh, grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man!

John Calvin Reformed

PSALM 60 David, who was now settled upon the throne, and had gained several signal victories, tending to confirm him in the kingdom, in this Psalm exalts the goodness of God, that he might at once express his gratitude, and by conciliating the favor of such as still stood out against his interests, unite the community, which had been rent into factions.

Commenting on Psalm 60:1-12

C.H. Spurgeon Reformed Baptist

Give us help from trouble. Help us to overcome the disasters of civil strife and foreign invasion; save us from further incursions from without and division within. Do thou, O Lord, work this deliverance, for vain is the help of man. We have painfully learned the utter impotence of armies, kings, and nations without thine help.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

God has spoken His promise in holiness, and that word is the full fountain of joy to all who believe it. Take comfort now in what He has sworn to give, as surely as if you already possessed it. When God speaks, pardon is yours, peace is yours, grace is yours, Christ is yours, heaven itself is yours.
