Matthew
Matthew 23:31ESV·traditional attribution

Thus you witness against yourselves that you are sons of those who murdered the prophets.

John Gill Reformed Baptist

Sin has its measure, like the Amorites of old; the fathers shed much blood, but their sons will fill the cup to the brim by crucifying the Son of God and murdering His apostles. Then the vengeance of God falls. Christ speaks this ironically, yet plainly: they understand what they are about to do, and what it will cost them.

Albert Barnes Presbyterian

The weight falls on "unto yourselves", He appeals to their own conscience. All their tomb-building, all their piety, is mere pretense masking hypocrisy; they know full well they approve what their fathers did, and in the same moment would do the same. They inherit not descent but the spirit of murderers.
