Isaiah
Isaiah 30:13ESV·traditional attribution

therefore this iniquity shall be to you like a breach in a high wall, bulging out and about to collapse, whose breaking comes suddenly, in an instant;

John Calvin Reformed

A wall that bulges outward threatens itself with ruin, because it has lost its cohesion and cannot stand. So the haughtiness of the wicked is a sure sign of their swift collapse, for they are nothing but wind and emptiness; their own weight will bring them down headlong. God permits them to swell for a time, but by their swelling they gather the very destruction that will crush them.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Write this down and engrave it, that it may stand as a witness forever. These words must outlast the present generation who reject them, shaming those who would not hear, justifying God's judgment upon them, and warning all ages that follow: here is the record of how wickedly they provoked Him before He brought the full weight of His severity upon them.

Commenting on Isaiah 30:8-17

John Gill Reformed Baptist

Their iniquity becomes a breach in a wall, swelling and bulging until it suddenly gives way. The higher the wall, the more violent the collapse, and the greater their fall will be. So their towering confidence in Egypt will come down with its own weight, shattering them to pieces in an instant.
