Ezekiel
Ezekiel 13:19ESV·traditional attribution

You have profaned me among my people for handfuls of barley and for pieces of bread, putting to death souls who should not die and keeping alive souls who should not live, by your lying to my people, who listen to lies.

John Calvin Reformed

God's name is truth itself; abolish truth and He becomes a ghost. These women have done worse than murder souls, they have made His word a lie, profaning His holiness and justice where He had chosen to dwell with His people. The crime is not merely among the Gentiles, who never knew Him; it is among those He called His own.

AI summary

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

The devil works through prophetesses no less than through male false prophets, and their sex neither excuses their sin nor shields them from God's rebuke. These women prophesy from their own hearts, saying whatever comes uppermost, and they find eager listeners among people who prefer pleasing lies to hard truths. When sinners grow bold, reprovers must be bold as well.

Commenting on Ezekiel 13:17-23

John Gill Reformed Baptist

The kerchiefs torn from their heads will expose their deceptions and bring them to contempt. My people will be delivered from their snares and lies, and those false prophets will cease to hunt them in the land, either they flee or face captivity. Then they will know that I am the Lord.
