Luke
Acts 20:13ESV·traditional attribution

But going ahead to the ship, we set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there, for so he had arranged, intending himself to go by land.

John Calvin Reformed

Paul chose the land route, I believe, for his health's sake; but mark his courtesy toward his companions. He would not lay strict demands on them but rather released them from duty and sent them by sea for their comfort, setting aside his own convenience. This mutual striving in kindness between Paul and his fellows is much to be commended.

AI summary

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Paul won't ride when he can walk and do good by the way. He takes a rough road alone, not to spare himself but to deny himself, keeping his body under and his heart free for God and for serving others as he goes.

John Gill Reformed Baptist

Assos was a city in Mysia, between Troas and Mitylene. The sea route to it was far longer than the land route, so Paul chose to walk while the others sailed and took him aboard at their appointment.
