Luke
Acts 17:13ESV·traditional attribution

But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was proclaimed by Paul at Berea also, they came there too, agitating and stirring up the crowds.

John Calvin Reformed

The Jews pursued Paul with a hatred so implacable it consumed them; they would not rest until they had opposed the gospel everywhere. But look deeper: this is Satan's work, using them as instruments to trouble Christ's kingdom and destroy men's salvation. He will never cease to weary the faithful servants of Christ, whether by open assault or secret ambush or division within.

AI summary

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

The apostles fled not for their own hides but to carry on their work elsewhere, as Christ commanded. The devil meant to stop the gospel by persecution and was outshot in his own bow; the brethren's care to send them away by night became the very means to spread it further. Flight was their charge, not their shame.

John Gill Reformed Baptist

These unbelieving Jews tracked Paul to Berea and stirred up the common people against him, painting the apostles as enemies to all law, human and divine alike. It was the same tactic they had used before: follow the gospel wherever it goes and poison the crowd against it.
