1 Kings 2:24ESV·author unknown

Now therefore as the LORD lives, who has established me and placed me on the throne of David my father, and who has made me a house, as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today.”

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Solomon's throne was not won by the sword like David's but settled at once; and when Adonijah could not rest easy under mercy, he ruined himself by his own restless ambition. Some men know not when they are well treated and so treasure up judgment for themselves by presuming on God's patience.

John Gill Reformed Baptist

Solomon sent Benaiah to execute the sentence, and he fell upon Adonijah and killed him. In those times, great men performed executions themselves, not common executioners; Gideon and Doeg did the same.

Keil & Delitzsch Lutheran

Solomon swears that Adonijah has spoken against his own life, invoking the God who established him firmly on David's throne despite the usurper's threat. God promised him a house; his kingdom will not be toppled by conspiracy. Adonijah will be executed this very day.
