Matthew
Matthew 23:20BSB·traditional attribution
So then, he who swears by the altar swears by it and by everything on it.
John Gill Reformed Baptist
When a man swears by the temple, he swears not merely by stones and timber, which cannot witness anything, but necessarily by God who dwells there. The temple has no power to bind an oath; only God does. So to swear by the temple is to swear by God Himself, whether the swearer intends it or not, and his word must be held sacred accordingly.
