Then Abimelech went to Thebez, encamped against it, and captured it.

Abimelech thought the tower at Thebez would fall as easily as the stronghold at Shechem, but he did not reckon that God had marked him for ruin. Those who prosper in one bold wickedness grow blind to their danger and rush headlong into the next. Evil pursues sinners, and sometimes catches them in their triumph.
