John 8:5ASV·traditional attribution

Now in the law Moses commanded us to stone such: what then sayest thou of her?

John Gill Reformed Baptist

They cared nothing for the Law itself, they voided it with their traditions at every turn. The point was not the woman's sin but the snare: if Christ upheld Moses, they would charge Him before the Roman; if He disagreed, they would brand Him an enemy of the Law and a defender of wickedness. They meant to trap Him either way.

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

Christ was hunted out of the city, yet back He came at dawn to His work in the temple. He lodged outside Jerusalem because His enemies had houses and He had not so much as a borrowed bed; prudent withdrawal at night does not excuse absence from duty by day. A constant preacher, in season and out of season.

Commenting on John 8:1-11

Albert Barnes Presbyterian

Moses commanded death for adultery, though He did not specify the manner. The Jews themselves determined it should be stoning. The prescribed punishment varied by circumstance: strangling in some cases, burning if the woman was a priest's daughter, stoning and the sword in others.
