John the Apostle
John 8:43ASV·traditional attribution

Why do ye not understand my speech? Even because ye cannot hear my word.

Jamieson-Fausset-Brown Reformed

Amid the blazing golden lamps of the treasury at tabernacles, when all Jerusalem danced in joy, Christ proclaims in the most absolute sense: I am the Light of the World. The Baptist was a burning lamp sent to witness to that Light; but He alone is the true Light that lightens every man coming into the world, the Messiah promised of old.

Why do ye not understand my speech? [even] because ye cannot hear my word. (k) Or, language: as though he said, "You do not understand what I say any more than if I spoke in a strange and unknown language to you."

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

I speak what I have seen with my Father, not hearsay, not hypothesis, but the exact counterpart of eternal truth itself. You do what you have seen with your father; and since there are but two families in this world, God's and the devil's, your works declare your parentage as plainly as mine declares mine.
