John the Apostle
John 8:24ASV·traditional attribution

I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for except ye believe that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

John Calvin Reformed

24. You shall die in your sins. Having formerly employed the singular number, in your sin, he now resorts to the plural number, in your sins; but the meaning is the same, except that in the former passage he intended to point out that unbelief is the source and cause of all evils.

Albert Barnes Presbyterian

Verse 24. That I am. That I am the Messiah. (v) "I said"

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

He had piped grace to them; they would not dance. Now He mourns in wrath, to see if they will lament. Four terrors fall on the stubborn: His departure, their enmity to the true Messiah, their fruitless seeking, and their inability to follow Him. Worse than war or plague, these spiritual judgments destroy the soul itself. Ichabod, the glory departs when Christ goes.
