John the Apostle
John 14:5ASV·traditional attribution

Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; how know we the way?

William Burkitt Anglican

Thomas still dreamed of a temporal kingdom and supposed Christ spoke of some earthly palace, not grasping that He meant access to the Father in heaven through Himself alone. Christ is not a road among others but the Author of the way, the Teacher of the truth that directs to life, and the Giver of that life itself.

AI summary

Matthew Henry Presbyterian

You know the way better than you think. Christ is willing to make the best of your weak knowledge, seeing good in you that you cannot yet see in yourselves. Thomas shows modesty in his ignorance, and Christ's word stirs him to seek further light rather than settle for confusion.

Commenting on John 14:4-11

Albert Barnes Presbyterian

Thomas and the others had not truly grasped what Jesus plainly taught them, their minds clogged with notions of an earthly kingdom. The root of unbelief is not lack of instruction but unwillingness to lay aside prejudice and contrary opinion; had he been willing to receive the plain truth, faith would have been simple.
